Displaced People Seek Refuge in Jebel Marra, Darfur

In the midst of ongoing conflict in Sudan, many displaced individuals are finding shelter in Jebel Marra, a region known for its mountainous terrain and relative safety. Arfa Adam, a mother fleeing the violence in El Fasher, shared her harrowing journey to Rokoro, where she hopes to provide a better future for her 7-month-old daughter, Fatima. The journey was fraught with challenges, including a lack of food and water, but the promise of safety in Jebel Marra motivated her to continue.

Despite the beauty of the area, which boasts diverse trees and waterfalls, the humanitarian situation remains dire. Displaced individuals like Ibtisam Omar, who fled from Kabkabiya, express a deep need for education and healthcare for their children. Local officials, such as Mohammed Adam, emphasize the moral obligation to support these displaced families, although they acknowledge the urgent need for humanitarian aid.

Ongoing Challenges for Displaced Families

The journey to Jebel Marra is not easy, as many families face harsh winter conditions while moving between mountainous areas. Suleiman Ibrahim, another displaced person, highlighted the fatigue and hunger experienced by many, particularly children and women. The lack of transportation forces some to walk for days, exacerbating their suffering.

According to Adam Rijal, spokesperson for the General Coordination for Displaced Persons and Refugees in Darfur, over 7.5 million displaced individuals have sought refuge in the region. The ongoing displacement crisis sees approximately 500 families arriving weekly, all in urgent need of assistance. The International Organization for Migration reports that the number of internally displaced persons in Sudan has surpassed 10 million, with 1.5 million in Darfur alone.

Jebel Marra: A Dual Identity

While Jebel Marra serves as a refuge for displaced individuals, it is also a popular tourist destination known for its stunning landscapes and rich cultural heritage. Visitors can engage in activities such as mountain trekking and exploring local villages, which reflect the traditions of the Fur tribe. The region is under the control of the Sudan Liberation Movement, which has declared neutrality in the ongoing conflict, aiming to maintain stability and safety for the population.

Since mid-April 2023, Sudan has been embroiled in a humanitarian crisis due to the conflict between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces, leading to significant loss of life and mass displacement. The Rapid Support Forces have gained control over most of Darfur, except for certain areas like Rokoro, Golo, and Nertiti, which remain under the influence of the Sudan Liberation Movement.
