Tragic Dichlorvos Poisoning Claims Lives of Children in Krasnoyarsk Krai
In a heartbreaking incident in Krasnoyarsk Krai, Russia, a large family has suffered the devastating loss of four children due to suspected poisoning from the insecticide dichlorvos. The regional prosecutor's office has identified dichlorvos poisoning as the primary cause of this tragedy, which unfolded after the family reportedly sprayed the insecticide in their home on September 20. The following day, symptoms of poisoning emerged, leading to a critical situation for the family.
According to reports, the family had consumed dumplings and chicken purchased from a local store for dinner before the illness began. By the morning of September 21, the children exhibited severe symptoms, prompting their uncle to call for help. Tragically, a six-year-old girl and a nine-year-old boy died shortly after being admitted to the hospital, followed by an 11-year-old girl and a 13-year-old girl the next day. The family's pregnant mother and father are currently receiving medical attention and are in stable condition.
Investigators from the Main Investigative Department of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation have confirmed that traces of dichlorvos were found in the vomit samples of the victims. The investigation continues, with forensic examinations being conducted to determine the exact cause of death. The case has drawn attention to the importance of adhering to safety guidelines when using toxic substances like dichlorvos, which is known for its potency against insects. Viktor Tutelyan, Deputy Chief Scientific Secretary of the Russian Academy of Sciences, emphasized the need for caution and proper ventilation after using such chemicals.
The Investigative Committee has opened a criminal case under Part 3 of Article 238 of the Criminal Code, focusing on the production and sale of unsafe products that resulted in the tragic deaths of the children. Authorities are also investigating the grocery store where the food was purchased, as it was found to be operating in violation of veterinary requirements.
This incident highlights the dangers of improper use of household chemicals and the critical need for public awareness regarding safety protocols. The Krasnoyarsk Territory Prosecutor's Office is closely monitoring the investigation, which has already involved questioning store employees and relatives, as well as reviewing surveillance footage from the grocery store.
