Four Young Children Discovered Abandoned in Squalid Apartment in Reims
In a distressing incident in Reims (Marne), four young children aged between two and six years were found abandoned in a filthy apartment on Sunday, May 26. The discovery was made by firefighters after an acquaintance of the children's mother alerted them. The conditions in the apartment were deplorable, with feces on the floor, and the children were found attempting to cook food on a hot plate placed on the ground.
The public prosecutor of the city, François Schneider, revealed that the apartment was devoid of basic necessities like clothes and food. Although the children were not malnourished, they exhibited psychological after-effects and were subsequently hospitalized for examination, with plans for their placement set for Tuesday, May 28.
Mother and Partner Arrested
The children's mother and her partner were not present when emergency services arrived. The mother returned later that day and called her partner, who subsequently attacked the police upon his arrival at the scene. Both individuals were detained by the authorities. The mother has been charged with 'evasion by ascendant of her legal obligations compromising the health and safety of the children', while her partner has been charged with 'rebellion' and 'violation of a judicial control'.
Both adults are known to the judicial system. The man was under judicial supervision for previous acts of domestic violence and violence against minors, including the four children found in the apartment. The mother is also known to the police and judicial services for narcotics-related offenses.
- The case has raised significant concerns about child welfare and judicial oversight in France. While the children were physically unharmed, their psychological state suggests prolonged neglect.
- Authorities are likely to conduct a thorough investigation into the living conditions and care the children received prior to this incident. Social services are expected to be involved in the children's future to ensure their well-being and safety.
