All Blacks Pay Tribute at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier
On November 15, 2024, members of the All Blacks rugby team, including players Sam Cane, Josh Lord, and Ethan de Groot, visited the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier under the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. This solemn occasion took place the day before their highly anticipated match against the French XV. The players laid a wreath and observed a moment of silence to honor the sacrifices of New Zealand soldiers who fought during the First World War.
A Humbling Experience for the All Blacks
In a heartfelt video shared on the team's Instagram account, Sam Cane expressed the significance of the tribute, stating, "It's a very humbling experience, to be honest." Cane, who will not participate in the upcoming match, wore a jacket adorned with a poppy, symbolizing remembrance for those who lost their lives in the war. This tribute is part of the All Blacks' tradition of honoring fallen soldiers whenever they visit France.
Continuing a Legacy of Remembrance
This tribute follows a similar homage made by the All Blacks in September 2023, when they performed a moving haka at the Longueval Memorial in the Somme, commemorating the 125 New Zealand soldiers who died during the Battle of the Somme in 1916. The All Blacks' consistent recognition of their historical ties to France and the sacrifices made by their soldiers reflects their deep respect and commitment to honoring the past.
