Al Jazeera English Wins AIB Award for Gaza Coverage
Al Jazeera English has been recognized with the prestigious Association for International Broadcasting (AIB) Award in the category of “Continuous News Coverage” for its extensive reporting on the ongoing conflict in Gaza. The award was presented during the 20th annual AIB ceremony held in London, where Al Jazeera outperformed notable competitors such as CNN, BBC, and ITV.
The award jury evaluated a compelling hour-long compilation of the channel's coverage, which highlights the severe humanitarian crisis and the impact of the Israeli military operations on the Palestinian population. Issa Ali, the acting director of Al Jazeera English, expressed pride in the team’s dedication to uncovering the truth amidst challenging circumstances, particularly for their colleagues working in Gaza.
Commitment to Reporting from Gaza
Al Jazeera English has maintained its commitment to delivering impactful journalism since its inception, focusing on stories that resonate with global audiences. It remains the only international English-language news channel still operational in Gaza, despite the closure of its offices in Jerusalem and Ramallah. Salah Najm, the Director of News, emphasized the professionalism and objectivity of their journalists, who strive to report on the realities faced by Palestinians in Gaza. He commended the bravery of the field team members, some of whom have made the ultimate sacrifice in pursuit of truth.
Ongoing Coverage Amidst Conflict
Since the escalation of violence on October 7, 2023, Al Jazeera English has been steadfast in its coverage of the war in Gaza, reporting on the daily displacements and the relentless bombings that have resulted in over 40,000 fatalities. The network's correspondents have continued to broadcast live updates, often facing direct threats to their safety and that of their families. This commitment to real-time reporting underscores Al Jazeera's role as a critical source of information during one of the most severe humanitarian crises in recent history.
