Shelling in El Fasher Claims Lives of Civilians
On November 24, 2024, a tragic incident unfolded in El Fasher, Sudan, where seven civilians were killed and 47 others injured due to intensive artillery shelling by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) targeting the Abu Shouk camp for displaced persons. The attack occurred during a period of escalating violence between the Sudanese army and the RSF, forcing many residents, particularly women and children, to flee their homes in search of safety.
Local health officials reported that all the victims were women, highlighting the devastating impact of the conflict on vulnerable populations. Dr. Ibrahim Khater, the Director General of Health in North Darfur, confirmed the casualties and noted that the only operational hospital in the area, a Saudi facility, continues to provide essential services despite the ongoing crisis. The Sudanese army's Sixth Infantry Division stated that the RSF bombarded the camp's vegetable market with three Howitzer shells, leading to significant civilian casualties.
Humanitarian Crisis Deepens Amid Ongoing Violence
The situation in Abu Shouk camp is dire, with thousands of displaced individuals living in constant fear of further attacks. The lack of international aid has exacerbated the humanitarian crisis, leaving residents without adequate food, water, and health services. Reports indicate that the RSF has been targeting civilian areas in El Fasher, particularly in southern and western neighborhoods, raising alarm among local residents.
Suleiman Al-Tahir, a resident of Al-Radif neighborhood, expressed his deep concern for the safety of civilians amidst the escalating violence. He urged all parties involved to cease hostilities and seek a political resolution to the conflict. Similarly, Afrah Adam, a resident of the Abu Shouk camp, described the pervasive atmosphere of fear and anxiety, particularly among children, and called for an end to the war to restore peace in their lives.
