Al-Bashir's Government: A New Era for Syria
Syrian caretaker Prime Minister Mohammad al-Bashir announced on December 11, 2024, that his government will remain in power until March 2025, amid a backdrop of returning Syrian refugees from Turkey. Al-Bashir emphasized the dire financial situation of the country, stating that the government has no foreign currency and only possesses the devalued Syrian pound. He attributed this crisis to a 'huge corrupt administrative legacy' inherited from the previous regime of Bashar al-Assad.
Commitment to Justice and Stability
In a bid to restore security and stability, Al-Bashir vowed that war criminals from the Assad regime would face justice under current Syrian laws. He expressed optimism about improving the situation over time, despite acknowledging the significant challenges ahead. During an interview with the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, he urged Syrian expatriates and refugees to return, asserting that the rights of all citizens and sects will be protected in the newly liberated Syria.
Gradual Return to Normalcy
The caretaker government reported that life is gradually returning to various Syrian provinces, with basic services being restored. The Turkish government has facilitated the return of displaced persons by extending the operation of land crossings with Syria. The first meeting of the transitional government took place in Damascus, where plans were discussed to dissolve security services, abolish terrorism laws, and reorganize the military. The caretaker government is focused on maintaining security and providing essential services during this transitional phase.
