Zelensky Urges Allies to Act Against North Korean Support for Russia
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has voiced strong criticism towards Western allies for their perceived inaction in the face of North Korea's increasing military support for Russia. In a recent address, Zelensky expressed frustration over the lack of long-range strike capabilities provided to Ukraine, emphasizing that allies like the United States, Britain, and Germany are merely observing rather than taking decisive action. He stated, "Everyone is just waiting for the North Korean military to start hitting the Ukrainians," urging immediate support to prevent escalation of the conflict.
North Korea's Support for Russia
Zelensky's comments come on the heels of North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui's declaration in Moscow that North Korea stands firmly with Russia until achieving "victory" in Ukraine. Choe praised Russia's military efforts, referring to the conflict as a "holy fight," and indicated that North Korea's troops may soon be deployed to support Russian forces. This development raises concerns about the potential for increased violence and the expansion of the conflict beyond Ukraine's borders.
Calls for Chinese Intervention
Amid these tensions, the United States and South Korea have appealed to China to leverage its influence over North Korea and Russia to prevent further escalation. Despite these calls, China has remained largely silent on the issue. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken highlighted the urgency of the situation, indicating that the international community expects China to play a more active role in curbing North Korea's military cooperation with Russia.
