Volkswagen, one of the world's largest car manufacturers, is facing unprecedented challenges as it considers closing factories in Germany for the first time in its history. This potential move is tied to a significant 10 billion euro ($11 billion) cost-cutting plan aimed at addressing slowing demand for vehicles, especially in the electric segment, and increasing competition from China. The company's job security program, a longstanding measure to protect workers, is also on the chopping block at six of its plants.
In response to these developments, Germany's largest union, AJ Metall, is exploring various options, including the possibility of a four-day work week. Union president Christiane Benner emphasized that no idea would be overlooked in their negotiations with Volkswagen. Discussions are set to commence in mid-to-late October, with potential strikes looming as early as late November if no satisfactory agreements are reached.
