Vladislav Dikidzhi Reflects on Challenges and Triumphs in Figure Skating
In a recent interview, Russian figure skater Vladislav Dikidzhi opened up about the pressures and challenges he faced during the current season, particularly after a rocky start that saw him miss test skates. Despite the difficulties, he has emerged as a prominent figure in the sport, showcasing his talent and determination.
Dikidzhi's performance at the recent national championships highlighted his resilience. He attempted a quadruple lutz during his exhibition program, a risky move that he approached with caution. "It is not necessary to jump a quad. I will see how it feels. If I understand that I can, I can jump. If I don’t feel it, I will do without it," he stated, emphasizing the importance of mental readiness in executing difficult jumps.
The skater acknowledged the mental toll of competition, particularly after experiencing a failed lutz during the Spartakiad of the strongest. He explained, "If something like that happens at the very beginning of the program, the main thing is not to dwell on the mistake, not to get lost, but to continue to fight for the rest of the elements." This mindset reflects his commitment to maintaining focus and composure, even in the face of setbacks.
Dikidzhi also discussed the emotional weight of competition, revealing that he often feels a deep sense of responsibility towards his coach and family. "That I let the coach down, that I upset my mom and dad. It seems to me that they take it much more painfully than I do," he shared, highlighting the personal stakes involved in his performances.
As he prepares for future competitions, including the potential for Olympic qualification, Dikidzhi remains focused on improving his technique and performance. He expressed a desire to try a quadruple axel at the national jumping championship, but also acknowledged the need to balance ambition with caution. "If everything works out, and you get the opportunity to go to the qualifying tournament in Beijing, wouldn’t it be better to refuse any risk, to spare your legs as much as possible?" he pondered, reflecting on the importance of strategic decision-making in his career.
