Escalation of Violence on the Beaugrenelle Slab in Paris

A peaceful evening on the Beaugrenelle slab in the 15th arrondissement of Paris turned into chaos on Friday, October 4, 2024, as rival gangs clashed in a violent brawl. Witnesses reported that the incident began around 6:30 p.m., with teenagers from the Balard gang and the Beaugrenelle gang, known as 'RD 4', engaging in a series of fights that left three individuals injured, including a minor in critical condition after being attacked with a bladed weapon.

The violence erupted in multiple locations across the slab, escalating quickly as the groups, some armed with weapons such as a katana and a knife, fought blow for blow. Local authorities have noted a troubling trend of increasing violence among youth gangs in the area, with this incident reminiscent of previous clashes, including the tragic case of Yuriy, a 14-year-old who was killed in a similar confrontation in 2021.

In response to the violence, police have made three arrests, and local officials are calling for increased security measures. Deputy Mayor Anthony Samama emphasized the need for a stronger police presence and community engagement to prevent further outbreaks of violence. He stated, 'We will increase the police presence in the coming days, as well as that of the educators.'

Mayor Philippe Goujon has also requested the installation of more surveillance cameras and the reinforcement of patrols in the area. He warned that without immediate action, the community could face another tragedy akin to the Yuriy affair. 'Security must be reinforced. Otherwise, we risk a Yuriy affair bis,' he cautioned.
