The citizens of Venezuela are voting today (Sunday) in fateful presidential elections, which may oust the Socialist Party and President Nicolás Maduro from power - if they are free and fair, which is highly doubtful.
Maduro, who has led the South American country since the death of its revered president Hugo Chavez in 2013, is facing the most significant challenge to his rule so far. His main opponent is former diplomat Edmundo Gonzalez, who was placed as the opposition's candidate after many of its leaders were disqualified and persecuted by the regime.
If Maduro wins a third consecutive six-year term, many Venezuelans are expected to join the mass exodus from the country, whose 7.7 million citizens have left it in recent years due to its economic collapse.
