Edmundo González Urrutia, the Venezuelan opposition candidate who claims to have won the July 28 presidential election against Nicolás Maduro, has left for Spain, his lawyer Jose Vicente Haro confirmed to AFP.
Venezuelan Vice President Delcy Rodriguez had previously announced that Gonzalez Urrutia had requested political asylum in Spain, and that Venezuela had granted him the necessary authorization, in the interest of peace and political calm in the country.
The Venezuelan judiciary issued an arrest warrant for Gonzalez Urrutia because of his insistence that he was the winner of the elections held last July, which the authorities declared Maduro the winner.
