US Diplomatic Efforts to Resolve Lebanon Conflict
In a bid to prevent the escalation of the conflict between Hezbollah and Israel, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken has confirmed ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at stabilizing the situation in Lebanon. Speaking after a summit in Laos, Blinken emphasized Washington's commitment to supporting a strong Lebanese state, which he believes is crucial for countering Hezbollah's influence in the region.
Blinken acknowledged Israel's right to defend itself amid its ongoing airstrikes targeting Hezbollah, while expressing deep concern for the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Lebanon. He stated, "We continue our intensive engagement to prevent a wider conflict in the region," highlighting the importance of creating a safe environment for civilians to return home and children to resume their education.
The US has been actively communicating with Lebanese leaders, including Prime Minister Najib Mikati and Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, stressing the urgency of addressing the presidential vacancy that has persisted for two years. Blinken reiterated that Lebanon must not allow Iran or Hezbollah to undermine its security and stability.
Despite calls for a ceasefire from Lebanese officials, the US State Department did not confirm any discussions regarding this matter. Meanwhile, US envoy to Lebanon, Amos Hochstein, stated that the US is working tirelessly to achieve a ceasefire, emphasizing the need to end the conflict.
The situation in Lebanon has been dire, with Israeli airstrikes since September 23 resulting in approximately 1,300 deaths and over 1.2 million people displaced. Hochstein condemned the attacks on UN peacekeeping forces and expressed condolences for the Lebanese soldiers killed in Israeli airstrikes. He reiterated the need to halt the bombing campaign in densely populated areas, particularly in Beirut, stating, "This is absolutely unacceptable."
The US, along with international partners including Japan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE, has called for an immediate ceasefire across the Lebanese-Israeli border to facilitate diplomatic efforts.
