US Central Command Thwarts Houthi Attacks in Gulf of Aden
On December 1, 2024, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) reported that its forces successfully thwarted multiple attacks by the Houthi group targeting US Navy destroyers and commercial vessels in the Gulf of Aden. The USS Stockdale and USS O'Kane were escorting three American commercial ships when the attacks occurred, which involved three ballistic missiles, an anti-ship cruise missile, and three suicide drones. Fortunately, there were no injuries or damage reported to either the US Navy or civilian ships.
Houthi Claims of Successful Military Operation
In response to the thwarted attacks, the Houthi group, through their military spokesman Yahya Saree, claimed responsibility for what they termed a 'qualitative military operation.' The Houthis asserted that their naval and missile forces launched 16 ballistic and winged missiles, successfully targeting American vessels, including the Stena Impossible, Maersk Saratoga, and Liberty Grace. This operation is part of the Houthis' ongoing campaign against ships associated with the US and its allies, particularly in light of the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
Regional Tensions and Implications
The recent attacks underscore the escalating tensions in the region, particularly as the Houthis have increasingly targeted vessels linked to Israel in solidarity with the Gaza Strip, which is currently facing severe humanitarian challenges due to the ongoing blockade. CENTCOM reiterated its commitment to protecting US interests and ensuring freedom of navigation in the Gulf, indicating that such attacks will not deter their operations in the region.
