Urgent Calls to Address Famine in Sudan
The humanitarian crisis in Sudan has reached alarming levels as the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees urgently calls for immediate action to prevent further casualties. Reports confirm that famine has officially struck North Darfur, where displaced families, including vulnerable children and pregnant women, are suffering from hunger and malnutrition. The situation has deteriorated to the point where deaths from starvation are being reported in displacement camps.
Rising Malnutrition Cases and Deaths
In a statement released on social media, the UNHCR highlighted the long-standing signs of famine that have now culminated in confirmed cases in North Darfur. Adam Rijal, spokesperson for the General Coordination for Displaced Persons and Refugee Camps in Darfur, reported over 450 cases of malnutrition among the most vulnerable populations. Tragically, five children have already succumbed to starvation in the Makhar camp, illustrating the urgent need for humanitarian assistance.
Refugee Crisis Intensifies Amid Ongoing Conflict
The ongoing conflict in Sudan, which erupted in April 2023 between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces, has exacerbated the situation, leading to approximately 18,800 deaths and displacing around 10 million people. As a result, about 2,500 Sudanese refugees have begun registering with the UNHCR at the Ethiopian border, having endured harsh conditions for over 100 days. International calls for intervention are growing, emphasizing the dire need to avert a humanitarian catastrophe that threatens millions with famine and death due to escalating food shortages.
