Al-Daraj neighborhood, also known as Bani Amer or Al-Barjaliya, holds a significant place in the Gaza Strip's history. Established by the Canaanites in the third millennium BC, this area is characterized by its ancient architecture and historical markets. The neighborhood, located in the heart of Gaza City, spans 2,432 dunums and is home to around 52,000 residents as of 2015. Its unique topography, filled with stairs, gives it its name, reflecting the various civilizations that have influenced its development over the centuries.
Cultural Heritage and Ongoing Conflict
Al-Daraj is renowned for its historical landmarks, including the Pasha Palace and several ancient mosques like the Great Omari Mosque. However, this rich heritage faces a dire threat from ongoing Israeli military actions. Since October 2023, the neighborhood has witnessed a systematic series of attacks aimed at erasing its cultural identity. Notably, the Israeli bombing of the Pasha Palace in December 2023 resulted in significant destruction, drawing condemnation from Palestinian authorities who view these actions as part of a broader strategy to obliterate Palestinian heritage.
The Impact of Violence on the Community
The ongoing violence has had devastating effects on the residents of Al-Daraj. Numerous airstrikes have targeted civilian areas, including schools and homes, leading to tragic loss of life. For instance, in August 2024, a bombing of schools sheltering displaced families resulted in the deaths of at least 100 civilians, many of whom were women and children. The community's resilience is tested as they navigate the dual challenges of preserving their cultural identity while facing the harsh realities of conflict.
