The United Nations Mission in Libya has announced the formation of a technical committee aimed at resolving the ongoing political crisis in Libya. This committee, composed of Libyan experts, will focus on establishing priorities and milestones for creating a consensus government. Stephanie Khoury, the Acting Head of the UN Mission, emphasized the importance of this initiative during a video address, highlighting that the details will be presented to the UN Security Council in an upcoming briefing.
The committee's initial phase will address electoral law issues, proposing time and procedural guarantees to facilitate the electoral process. Additionally, it aims to create a governance framework that reflects the needs of all Libyan society, including marginalized groups such as women and youth.
The UN mission reiterated its commitment to protecting the interests of the Libyan people and promoting national reconciliation. This initiative comes in the context of a political divide between two rival governments: the Government of National Unity led by Abdul Hamid Dbeibah in Tripoli and a rival government appointed by the House of Representatives under Osama Hamad in Benghazi.
Libyans are hopeful that these efforts will help end the prolonged transitional periods that have persisted since the fall of Muammar Gaddafi's regime, ultimately leading to a resolution of the political and armed conflicts that have plagued the nation for over a decade.
