UN Warns of Imminent Humanitarian Crisis in Northern Gaza
The United Nations has issued a dire warning regarding the humanitarian situation in northern Gaza, stating that the Palestinian population is at an imminent risk of death due to famine, disease, and violence. A joint statement from 15 heads of major UN humanitarian agencies described the conditions as "horrific," emphasizing the urgent need for international attention and action. The officials highlighted that all residents of northern Gaza are facing severe threats to their lives as the region has been under siege for nearly a month, cut off from essential aid and life-saving supplies.
Escalating Violence and Humanitarian Needs
The situation has worsened dramatically with ongoing Israeli military operations, which have resulted in hundreds of deaths, primarily among women and children. The UN inter-agency committee has called for Israel to comply with international court decisions and cease its attacks on Gaza, particularly those targeting humanitarian workers. The committee pointed out that humanitarian aid is failing to meet the escalating needs of the population, with severe restrictions on access preventing aid from reaching those in dire need.
Call for Immediate Ceasefire
In light of the escalating crisis, UN officials have called for an immediate cessation of hostilities and a sustainable ceasefire. UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric highlighted that the Israeli blockade is obstructing relief efforts in northern Gaza, where nearly 100,000 Palestinians have been displaced. Currently, about 75,000 people remain in northern Gaza, enduring severe shortages of power and fuel. The ongoing violence, particularly since the Israeli military began extensive bombing operations on October 5, raises concerns that the situation may worsen further if immediate action is not taken.
