UN Security Council Urges Israel to Protect UNRWA Amid Gaza Crisis
The United Nations Security Council has issued a strong warning to Israel regarding its recent legislative proposals that could severely impact the operations of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) in Gaza. Following a meeting on Wednesday, members of the Security Council unanimously called on Israel to respect the work of UNRWA and ensure the safety of its employees. The U.S. has also expressed deep concern over the situation, highlighting the urgent need for Israel to address the deteriorating humanitarian conditions in the Gaza Strip.
The Israeli Knesset's Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee recently approved two bills aimed at terminating UNRWA's activities, a move that UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned. UNRWA head Philippe Lazzarini warned that the passage of these bills would have dire consequences, potentially leading to the collapse of the humanitarian response in Gaza, which is already facing severe challenges. Lazzarini emphasized that the people of Gaza are on the brink of a man-made famine due to ongoing conflicts and evacuations ordered by Israeli officials.
In a recent statement, U.S. Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield criticized the proposed legislation, stating that it could hinder UNRWA's essential work and exacerbate the suffering of the Gazan population. She urged Israel to take immediate action to improve the humanitarian situation and allow displaced civilians to return to their homes. The British, French, and Algerian ambassadors also joined in condemning Israel's actions, calling for a reassessment of its approach to humanitarian aid in the region.
