United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres condemned the Israeli attack on the Al-Tabaeen School in Gaza City, which resulted in the tragic deaths of more than 100 displaced Palestinians. This incident has raised significant concerns about the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the region, particularly as the school had been transformed into a shelter for those fleeing the violence.
Farhan Haq, the deputy spokesman for Guterres, expressed dismay over the lack of implementation of UN Security Council resolutions aimed at curbing the violence. He emphasized that the Secretary-General supports the mediation efforts led by the United States, Egypt, and Qatar to forge a ceasefire agreement and facilitate the release of detainees in Gaza.
The attack on the Al-Tabaeen School occurred during dawn prayers, highlighting the vulnerability of civilians in conflict zones. Those injured were rushed to a partially functioning hospital, which is currently facing severe shortages of essential medicines, clean water, and adequate beds for the injured.
Since July 4, there have been at least 21 attacks on schools repurposed as shelters, resulting in the deaths of at least 274 individuals, including women and children. The Gaza Strip has been under intense military operations since October 7, 2023, leading to an overwhelming humanitarian crisis with approximately 132,000 casualties, predominantly among children and women, and over 10,000 individuals reported missing.
Despite widespread condemnation from the international community, including calls from the UN Security Council and the International Court of Justice, Israel continues its military operations in Gaza, exacerbating the already dire humanitarian situation and ignoring pleas to halt the violence.
