Opening of First School in Southern Gaza Amid Ongoing Conflict
In a significant development amidst the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, the first school has officially opened in the shelter camps located in the Al-Mawasi area of Khan Yunis. This initiative aims to provide education to children who have been severely affected by the recent conflict, which has devastated the region's educational infrastructure. The newly established school, set up in tents, can accommodate approximately 1,500 students, offering them a chance to resume their education despite the challenges they face.
The Palestinian Ministry of Education reported that over 600,000 students in Gaza have been deprived of their education for two consecutive years due to the ongoing Israeli military actions. The ministry highlighted the tragic impact of the conflict, noting that 10,000 students have lost their lives, and 15,000 have sustained injuries. Additionally, 19,000 students have been forcibly displaced, further complicating their access to education. The situation remains dire, with 39,000 students unable to take high school exams last year and 58,000 children missing the opportunity to start first grade.
The opening of this school represents a glimmer of hope for the children of Gaza, who have endured unimaginable hardships. However, the backdrop of destruction is stark, with reports indicating that 90% of government school buildings have been destroyed and 400 teachers have lost their lives during the conflict. The ongoing Israeli offensive, backed by the United States, has led to catastrophic humanitarian conditions, with over 144,000 casualties reported, including many women and children. The situation is deemed one of the worst humanitarian disasters globally.
