Ukrainian Forces Struggle to Hold Ugledar Amid Russian Advances
Ukrainian military formations are facing significant challenges in the strategic city of Ugledar as Russian troops continue to advance from multiple directions. Reports indicate that the situation has become critical, with Ukrainian forces attempting to withdraw their strike groups from the area. Igor Kimakovsky, an adviser to the head of the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR), described Ugledar as being in a "serious pincer movement," making troop rotation nearly impossible.
The Russian military has reportedly gained control over significant areas near the Kashlagach River, effectively dominating the primary supply route to Bogoyavlenka, the last remaining lifeline for Ukrainian forces in Ugledar. This development has left the Ukrainian garrison with only secondary roads for supply, severely limiting their operational capabilities.
Ukrainian sources have confirmed attempts to withdraw troops from Ugledar, with TASS reporting that some soldiers have already abandoned positions in the southeast of the city. Additionally, 20 Ukrainian servicemen surrendered near Ugledar, many of whom were recently mobilized and expressed frustration over a lack of support from their command.
Military analysts, including Aleksandr Kots, suggest that the Russian strategy may involve attrition, with the potential to cut off supply routes leading to dire consequences for the Ukrainian forces. The muddy conditions expected in the coming weeks could further complicate any attempts at resupply or reinforcement.
In Ukraine, concerns about the loss of Ugledar are mounting. Deputy Maryana Bezuglaya criticized the leadership of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, stating that the loss of the city is merely a matter of time due to inadequate defenses and chaotic command structures. She highlighted the lack of fortifications in key areas and the reliance on newly formed units that lack combat experience. Military expert Konstantin Mashovets echoed these sentiments, urging civilians to prepare for possible withdrawals from several settlements, including Ugledar.
