UEFA Takes Tough Action Against Albania's Mirlind Daku
UEFA has imposed a two-match ban on Albania's star striker, Mirlind Daku, following his involvement in nationalist chants after the European Championship match against Croatia. The incident, which took place in Hamburg, has resulted in severe sanctions for both the player and the Albanian Football Association.
Incident and Apology
After the 2-2 draw with Croatia, Daku was seen using a megaphone to lead nationalist chants in front of the Albanian fans. This behavior was deemed to have 'brought football into disrepute' and violated the basic principles of conduct. Daku subsequently apologized on social media, stating, 'Sorry if I offended anyone after the game against Croatia, the effect of the game did such things to me.' Despite the apology, UEFA's disciplinary body decided on the ban.
Financial Penalties and Further Investigations
In addition to Daku's suspension, the Albanian Football Association has been fined a total of 47,500 euros. This includes 25,000 euros for spreading provocative messages and an additional 22,500 euros for offenses committed by fans, such as setting off fireworks and invading the pitch. UEFA also noted that investigations into potential racist or discriminatory behavior by supporters are still ongoing.
Daku's suspension means he will miss the crucial match against Spain and a potential round of 16 match, impacting Albania's chances at the championship. The Albanian Federation has urged its supporters to act responsibly to avoid further incidents.
- The North Macedonian Football Association described the nationalist chants as 'scandalous,' further intensifying the situation. Serbia even threatened to boycott the European Championship due to the incident.
- The Albanian Federation has called on its fans to avoid creating 'completely avoidable incidents and riots,' emphasizing the importance of responsible behavior at sporting events.
