PSG Issues Warning After Homophobic Chants; PSV Fans Barred from Match

PSG has warned supporters against homophobic chants following recent incidents, while PSV Eindhoven fans will not attend the match due to safety concerns.

PSG Issues Warning Against Homophobic Chants

Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) has issued a stern message to its supporters following homophobic chants during the recent home game against Strasbourg. In an email sent out just hours before their Champions League match against PSV Eindhoven, the club stressed that such behavior is unacceptable at the Parc des Princes. PSG emphasized that it aims for collective excellence and respect among fans, stating, "The chants sung during the last home game against Strasbourg have no place in the Parc des Princes." The club reiterated its commitment to inclusivity, urging fans to support the team without resorting to discrimination.

The club also warned of potential sanctions if these incidents continue, which could affect not only the match against PSV but all future games. This follows a FIFA measure from 2019 that allows for matches to be interrupted due to homophobic chants, although it has rarely been enforced.

PSV Eindhoven Supporters Face Travel Ban

In a related development, the absence of PSV Eindhoven supporters at the Parc des Princes has raised eyebrows. A ministerial decree issued on October 16 prohibits the travel of individuals claiming to be PSV supporters due to concerns over public safety. This decision came as a surprise to PSV, who had already sold 2,000 tickets for the match. The decree cited previous incidents of violence involving PSV fans, including disturbances at a match in Lens in October 2023.

Despite a ruling from the Council of State suspending the travel ban, which was seen as a victory for PSV, the club ultimately chose to forgo their ticket allocation, returning seats to PSG. PSV coach Peter Bosz expressed frustration over the situation, calling it "ridiculous" and lamenting the absence of fans at such an important match. He emphasized the significance of supporters in creating the celebratory atmosphere that football embodies.

Ongoing Tensions Amid Safety Concerns

The backdrop of these events is heightened by ongoing safety concerns in France, particularly in light of the recent terrorist threats and the strain on police resources due to the Olympic period. The Ministry of the Interior noted that some PSG supporters have also exhibited violent behavior in the past, complicating the security landscape for the match. The situation underscores the delicate balance between ensuring safety at sporting events and maintaining the spirit of football as a celebration for all fans.
