Typhoon Shanshan Causes Widespread Devastation Across Japan
Typhoon Shanshan, the 10th typhoon to strike Japan this year, has left a trail of destruction across the country, particularly in Kyushu and Shikoku. As it moves toward the Kansai region, including Osaka, the Japan Meteorological Agency reported that the typhoon's intensity has weakened, but the threat of landslides and flooding remains high. The storm, which made landfall on August 29, has already caused significant rainfall, with predictions of up to 300mm in some areas.
Fatalities and Injuries Reported
As of now, the storm has resulted in at least six fatalities and left 125 others injured. The most devastating incidents include a landslide in Aichi Prefecture that claimed three lives and a man who was killed when his house partially collapsed in Shikoku. The typhoon's impact has led to widespread evacuations, affecting over five million residents. Authorities issued high alerts for flooding and landslides, urging immediate action to ensure safety.
Economic Impact and Factory Shutdowns
The economic toll of Typhoon Shanshan is significant, with major companies like Toyota halting operations at all 14 of its plants in Japan. Other manufacturers, including Nissan and Honda, have also suspended operations in Kyushu, a critical hub for semiconductor production. The typhoon has disrupted transportation services, with numerous flights canceled and Shinkansen services suspended, affecting nearly 50,000 passengers. As Japan braces for the aftermath of this powerful storm, local authorities continue to monitor the situation closely.
