Indictment Filed Against Two Negev Residents for Smuggling Weapons Using Drones

The Beersheba District Court has received an indictment against Zohar Abu Rakaik (26) and Imad Huashla (27), residents of the Negev, for their involvement in a sophisticated operation to smuggle weapons from Egypt into Israel using drones. The indictment, filed by Attorney Assaf Bar Yosef of the Southern District Attorney's Office, outlines a conspiracy to import not only weapons but also drugs, highlighting a troubling trend in illegal arms trafficking in the region.

Details of the Smuggling Operation

According to the indictment, the duo purchased a drone capable of carrying loads up to 50 kg for 70,000 NIS. They successfully imported weapons on three separate occasions, utilizing off-road vehicles and drones to transport the arms from the Egyptian side of the border. Each gun smuggled reportedly earned them between $800 and $1,000. In one instance, the defendants were caught attempting to bring back a drone loaded with weapons, which was intercepted and thwarted by Israeli Defense Forces (IDF).

The operation involved a methodical approach where one defendant would fly the drone into Egypt, where firearms and ammunition were attached, while the other would retrieve the drone upon its return to Israeli territory. The weapons were then stored at a collection point in Bir Hadaj, awaiting transport by vehicle.

Rising Concerns Over Illegal Weapons Trafficking

The prosecutor's office has expressed grave concerns regarding the increasing trend of illegal weapons imports through both the Jordanian and Egyptian borders. This surge has led to a 'flooding' of the market with illegal arms, resulting in lower prices and greater accessibility for criminal elements and potential threats to the state. The indictment emphasizes that the use of drones signifies a significant investment by smugglers, posing heightened risks to national security and facilitating easier execution of terrorist activities. The ongoing situation calls for urgent attention to combat the proliferation of illegal arms in the region.
