Tragic Incident at Cannes Wedding Celebration

A tragic accident marred a wedding celebration in the Bocca district of Cannes (Alpes-Maritimes) on Saturday evening, resulting in the death of a four-year-old boy. The incident occurred around 9:15 p.m. when the child, who had escaped the vigilance of his mother, attempted to cross the road to join his father on the other side. Unfortunately, a vehicle traveling on Chemin de la Bastide struck the child, leading to a fatal outcome.

Emergency Response and Investigation

Emergency services arrived at the scene promptly but were unable to save the child, who was in cardio-respiratory arrest. The motorist involved in the accident initially fled the scene, fearing an attack from the crowd of wedding guests. However, he later contacted the police and was arrested at his home in La Roquette-sur-Siagne, approximately ten kilometers away. The driver was subjected to alcohol and drug tests, both of which returned negative results. He is expected to be indicted shortly for 'involuntary manslaughter.'

A total of 35 firefighters were mobilized to handle the situation, and four wedding guests, who were in shock, received medical treatment from emergency services. The tragic event has left the community in mourning and raised concerns about road safety near event venues.

  • The incident has sparked discussions about the importance of vigilance and road safety, especially during events that involve children. Authorities are urging parents and guardians to keep a close watch on their children, particularly in areas with heavy traffic.
  • Local officials are also considering additional safety measures in the Bocca district to prevent such tragedies in the future. These measures may include increased signage, speed bumps, and more visible pedestrian crossings to ensure the safety of residents and visitors alike.
