Time Instead of Money: 20 Years of Heartfelt Volunteering at St. Gisela Retirement Home
In Gräfelfing, Germany, the heartwarming initiative "Time Instead of Money" has been a beacon of compassion and community care for the last two decades. Co-founded by Sonja Mayer and Angela Wimmer, this initiative, dedicated to the voluntary social care of the residents at Caritas St. Gisela retirement home, has enriched lives through simple yet profound acts of kindness. Mirjam Dirscherl, the head of the retirement home, aptly describes it as “a gift for our residents, the employees, the house.”
The concept behind "Time Instead of Money" is straightforward but powerful: providing time and attention instead of monetary donations. Volunteers visit residents, go for walks, read to them, and listen to their life stories, offering warmth and companionship. This initiative began modestly in March 2004 with just three to four volunteers and has grown to around 17 active members today, meeting every third Thursday of the month in the home's cafe.
Over the years, "Time Instead of Money" has faced several challenges. In 2009, when the old people’s home was demolished and replaced with a new building, volunteers continued their support despite residents being temporarily relocated. The COVID-19 pandemic also posed significant obstacles, leading to a temporary halt in visits. However, the initiative resumed its activities, underscoring the unwavering commitment of its volunteers.
Aside from regular visits, the initiative organizes special activities such as accompanying seniors to social performances, attending services, and running play and painting groups. Recently, they replanted the nursing home’s raised beds, thanks to a donation from the Käfer Foundation. Mirjam Dirscherl praises the "uncanny talent" of the volunteers to always come up with new and delightful offerings for the residents.
To commemorate their 20th anniversary, "Time Instead of Money" is celebrating with a special event on June 21st at the retirement home. This milestone is not just a celebration of the initiative's success but a testament to the profound impact of giving time and heart.
- While the focus of the "Time Instead of Money" initiative is on providing voluntary social care within the retirement home, its existence highlights the broader importance of community involvement and volunteerism. Nationwide, similar programs can play a crucial role in bridging generational gaps and reinforcing the social fabric.
- In other parts of the world, particularly in Eastern Europe, communities face different challenges. For instance, ongoing conflicts like those seen in the Ukrainian regions of Donetsk and Kharkiv highlight the human cost of geopolitical strife. Such areas might benefit from the spirit of initiatives like "Time Instead of Money", focusing on rebuilding social trust and providing emotional and social support in times of crisis.
