Tensions Rise Within Syrian Opposition After Turkish Meeting
A recent meeting in Gaziantep, Turkey, between Turkish officials and leaders of the Syrian opposition has sparked significant tensions within the Syrian National Coalition and its affiliated factions. The gathering, which involved representatives from the Turkish Foreign Ministry and Intelligence Service, aimed to address internal issues within the Syrian Interim Government. However, it resulted in a public fallout between the head of the Interim Government, Abdul Rahman Mustafa, and the Al-Sham Front, a key faction within the Syrian National Army.
The Al-Sham Front announced on September 4 that it was freezing its cooperation with the Interim Government, demanding the National Coalition withdraw confidence from Mustafa and refer him to judicial authorities. This declaration was fueled by what the Front described as “unprecedented hostility” from Mustafa, which they believe undermines the Syrian revolution and exacerbates internal discord. In response, Mustafa has accused various factions, including the Levant Front, of failing to address administrative issues, leading to a breakdown in relations.
Turkey's Role and Future of the Interim Government
Despite rampant speculation about a potential Turkish decision to dismiss Abdul Rahman Mustafa in favor of Abdul Majeed Barakat, a deputy in the National Coalition, informed sources clarified that no such decision has been made. Turkey remains committed to not interfering in the internal appointments of the Syrian opposition but emphasizes the need for cooperation amidst growing regional tensions and economic pressures, particularly regarding the refugee crisis.
The head of the National Coalition, Hadi Al-Bahra, has received requests for a vote of no confidence against Mustafa but has opted to refer the matter to the political body for further consideration. This has drawn criticism from Mustafa, who argues it violates internal regulations. In light of the ongoing disputes, Al-Bahra has initiated committees to investigate the accusations against Mustafa and to evaluate the performance of the Interim Government over the past four years.
As tensions continue to escalate, Turkish officials have urged the Syrian opposition to focus on practical solutions rather than internal strife, highlighting the importance of addressing the needs and aspirations of the Syrian people.
