Syrian Opposition Gains Ground in Aleppo Amid Russian Bombardment

The Syrian armed opposition has successfully expanded its control over several neighborhoods in Aleppo, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict. This development comes on the fourth day of the 'Deterrence of Aggression' battle, during which Russian warplanes have resumed bombing the city for the first time since 2016. The opposition forces have reportedly taken control of approximately 15 neighborhoods, including key locations such as the municipal palace and the Aleppo Citadel. In addition to Aleppo, they have also secured control over 70 towns and villages in the surrounding countryside.

The opposition's military operations have led to confrontations with various groups, including the Kurdish People's Protection Units and Iranian-backed forces. The General Command of the Military Operations Department stated that clashes are ongoing in areas like Ashrafieh and Sheikh Maqsoud, while they also engage with regime forces in Andan, north of Aleppo. As a precautionary measure, the opposition has imposed a curfew in Aleppo to ensure civilian safety, claiming that the city will soon be fully secured.

Russian and Syrian Forces Respond to Opposition Advances

In response to the opposition's gains, the Syrian Ministry of Defense has reported regaining control of previously lost positions and continues to confront what they label as terrorist groups. The situation in Aleppo and Idlib has been described as deteriorating, with the Russian Defense Ministry claiming to have eliminated 200 militants in a single day. Russian and Syrian airstrikes have targeted opposition positions, particularly in areas recently captured by the opposition.

Amid these developments, Iranian officials have characterized the resurgence of opposition forces as part of a broader American-Zionist plot, while Turkey has expressed concerns over the Syrian regime's actions in Idlib, which they believe undermine agreements made during the Astana talks. Egypt has also voiced its support for the Syrian state, emphasizing the need for stability and territorial integrity in the region.
