Syrian Armed Opposition Expands Control to 22% of Country
Recent maps from Al Jazeera's SANA news verification agency reveal that the Syrian armed opposition has significantly increased its territorial control, now commanding 40,000 square kilometers, which accounts for 22% of Syria's total area. This expansion comes in the wake of military operations dubbed “Deterrence of Aggression” and “Dawn of Freedom,” which have allowed the opposition to double its previously held territory from 11%.
Key Victories in Northern Syria
The opposition has successfully regained control over the entire city of Idlib and its surrounding areas, as well as most neighborhoods in Aleppo, except for those still held by Kurdish forces. Notable victories include the capture of strategic locations in the Hama countryside and several key airports, including Aleppo International Airport and Meng Military Airport. Clashes with regime forces have intensified since November 27, with opposition factions making significant advances in multiple regions.
Objectives of the Recent Military Operations
The Al-Fath Al-Mubin Operations Room, representing the opposition, has stated that the primary goals of these operations are to disrupt regime plans, protect civilians from military threats, and secure liberated areas. The operations also aim to facilitate the return of displaced individuals and eliminate the regime's influence in northwestern Syria. The Syrian National Army has announced the commencement of the “Dawn of Freedom” operations room, which focuses on liberating areas currently under regime and Kurdish control.
