Syria's Political Transition: A New Era Begins

In a significant shift in the Syrian political landscape, the newly formed Syrian Interim Government has announced the suspension of the constitution and parliament for a three-month transitional period. Obeida Arnaout, the spokesman for the government's Political Affairs Department, emphasized the need for a legal and human rights committee to review and amend the constitution. This move aims to prioritize the protection of institutions and ensure accountability for past injustices, particularly against the regime of ousted President Bashar al-Assad.

The transitional government, led by Mohamed al-Bashir, who previously headed the “Salvation Government” in Idlib, is tasked with steering the country towards a more inclusive and democratic governance structure. This announcement follows a rapid offensive by opposition forces, which resulted in the capture of key cities including Aleppo and Damascus, ultimately forcing Assad to flee to Russia.

International Support for Syria's Transition

The international community, particularly the Group of Seven (G7) nations, has expressed strong support for this political transition in Syria. In a recent statement, G7 leaders reaffirmed their commitment to a Syrian-led process that respects human rights and promotes a non-sectarian government. They emphasized the importance of accountability for the Assad regime's actions and pledged to assist in the recovery and rehabilitation of Syria.

The G7's support aligns with the principles outlined in UN Security Council Resolution 2254, which calls for a credible and inclusive political process. The leaders also highlighted the necessity of preserving Syria's territorial integrity and national unity while ensuring the safe return of displaced individuals.

In addition, the French Foreign Ministry has engaged with Syrian civil society and the Syrian Negotiating Committee, reinforcing the commitment to a peaceful and representative political transition. Meanwhile, the new Syrian authorities have expressed hopes for positive relations with countries that respect Syria's sovereignty and territorial unity, marking a potential turning point in the nation's tumultuous history.
