Sudanese Army Gains Ground Against Rapid Support Forces
In a significant military advancement, the Sudanese army has regained control of the Sennar Sugar Factory area, a strategic stronghold previously held by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Defense Minister Yassin Ibrahim announced the successful operation, which involved air strikes and ground assaults that took place at dawn on December 2, 2024. This area, located between Sennar and Al-Jazeera states, had been a focal point of conflict, with the RSF using it as a base for attacks in the region.
The army's operations did not stop there; they also managed to retake the city of Umm Al-Qura, located near Wad Madani, the capital of Al-Jazeera State. This victory is part of a broader campaign to reclaim areas controlled by the RSF, which has held significant territories in central Sudan since December 2023. Military sources indicate that the army is tightening its grip on the RSF forces entrenched in Wad Madani, with reports of control over surrounding towns such as Wad Al-Mahidi and Al-Hareez.
Ongoing Battles and Regional Implications
In addition to the successes in Sennar and Al-Jazeera, the Sudanese army has intensified its efforts in Khartoum and North Kordofan. Reports confirm that the army has made significant gains in the Ombada locality of Omdurman, regaining control of key areas previously held by the RSF. The army's operations have involved heavy weaponry and strategic artillery, showcasing a robust military response to the ongoing conflict.
The situation in North Kordofan is also critical, with the army reportedly reaching the outskirts of Umm Rawaba, a city used by the RSF as a military base. The conflict has resulted in civilian casualties, with accusations against the RSF for shelling the Zamzam camp for displaced persons in North Darfur, leading to numerous deaths.
Amid these developments, the Sudanese government has accused Chad of supporting the RSF, alleging that Chadian air bases have been used for drone attacks against Sudanese positions. The Sudanese Ministry of Defense has vowed to respond to these allegations, indicating a potential escalation in regional tensions.
As the conflict continues to unfold, the Sudanese army's recent gains mark a pivotal moment in the ongoing struggle for control in the region, with implications for both national stability and humanitarian conditions.
