A stolen bronze sculpture by Rembrandt Bugatti, valued at €100,000, was recovered in Rouen. Two suspects, including an antiques dealer, face trial for theft and fraud. Discover the details of this intriguing art crime case.

In November 2023, a significant art theft case unfolded in Rouen, France, involving a bronze sculpture by renowned artist Rembrandt Bugatti. The sculpture, valued at 100,000 euros, was reported stolen by the daughter of a collector in August 2023. The investigation led to the arrest of two suspects: a 67-year-old antiques dealer and a 61-year-old friend of the collector's father, both of whom are now facing legal proceedings.

The antiques dealer, who had visited the collector's family multiple times, was apprehended on August 7. Investigators discovered an invoice in his store for the sale of a bronze Bugatti elephant, which he had falsely claimed was a replica. The friend of the collector's father was arrested the following day, denying any involvement in the theft.

Police investigations revealed that the stolen bronze was located at the home of an unsuspecting buyer, who had paid 3,600 euros for the piece, believing it to be legitimate art. The buyer paid part of this sum to the antiques dealer and another portion to the alleged thief. Both suspects are scheduled to appear in court on November 22, facing charges of theft, fraud, and receiving stolen goods. The bronze sculpture has been seized and will be returned to its rightful owner.

  • The investigation into the theft highlights the ongoing issues of art crime and the challenges faced by law enforcement in recovering stolen artworks. Rembrandt Bugatti, the sculptor, is celebrated for his animal sculptures and is part of a notable artistic legacy, being the brother of the famed automobile manufacturer Ettore Bugatti.
  • Art collectors and enthusiasts are often advised to exercise caution when purchasing high-value pieces, ensuring provenance and authenticity to avoid falling victim to fraud. This case serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance in the art market.
