An investigation has been initiated into alleged intentional violence by a public authority figure following the circulation of a video showing the brutal arrest of a young man in Vénissieux, Rhône. The footage, which surfaced on social media, depicts a police officer delivering multiple punches to a man on the ground. The incident occurred near a tobacco bar in the Minguettes district, with other officers present. This arrest has ignited significant backlash among community members and elected officials.
Community Leaders Demand Accountability
LFI deputy Idir Boumertit has invoked article 40 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, highlighting 'abuse of force' and 'acts of violence' by the police. However, Lyon prosecutor Thierry Dran mentioned that no official report had been received from Boumertit as of Wednesday afternoon. The prosecutor’s office has confirmed the opening of an investigation into the matter.
Details of the Incident
According to various sources, the incident escalated when police officers from the Specialized Field Brigade (BST) were monitoring a known deal point around 7 p.m. They faced projectile attacks from a group of fifteen individuals, some of whom hid in the tobacco bar. The man, who is the son of the tobacco shop owner, allegedly insulted and threatened the officers, which led to his arrest for contempt and rebellion.
In another video, a man can be seen being forcefully removed from the store by a police officer, with the sound of a taser clearly heard. Reports indicate that the individual was taken into custody but later released for medical treatment. Community activist Mokrane Kessi noted that the police also used tear gas, creating a hazardous environment for nearby elderly patrons and other customers.
Different perspectives have emerged regarding the conduct of the police. While some security sources claim that the arrested man was actively resisting and kicking during the arrest, community leaders argue that the force used was excessively violent. The case remains under investigation, and a confrontation between the involved officers and the detained individual is expected following his discharge from the hospital. Pending inquiries could lead to a review by the IGPN (Inspection Générale de la Police Nationale) to ascertain whether the police’s use of force was justified.
