Sevmash Advances in Nuclear Submarine Construction
Sevmash, a prominent Russian shipbuilding enterprise, has made significant strides in the construction of new nuclear submarines, particularly with the recent completion of the testing phase for the Arkhangelsk submarine of Project 885M (Yasen-M). Mikhail Budnichenko, the head of Sevmash, confirmed that the Arkhangelsk is now being prepared for transfer to the Russian Navy after successfully completing all testing stages this year.
In addition to the Arkhangelsk, the cruiser Knyaz Pozharsky, part of Project 955A (Borey-A), has also undergone successful tests after being launched this year. Budnichenko noted that both submarines completed their testing programs during the summer navigation, marking a significant milestone in Russia's naval capabilities.
The construction of the Dmitry Donskoy cruiser is progressing as scheduled, with Budnichenko stating that the ship is currently being finalized in the workshop. This cruiser is part of the Borey-A project, which is crucial for Russia's strategic nuclear deterrence.
The Role of Yasen-M and Borey-A Submarines in Russia's Naval Strategy
The Arkhangelsk submarine, designed by the Malakhit Design Bureau, is the fifth ship of the Yasen/Yasen-M project, joining the ranks of previously built submarines like Severodvinsk and Kazan. The Yasen-M class is expected to form the backbone of the Russian Navy's multi-purpose submarine forces, equipped with advanced electronic systems and weaponry, including the hypersonic Zircon missiles.
Military experts emphasize the significance of these submarines in Russia's non-nuclear deterrence strategy. The Yasen series is designed for a wide range of operations, including anti-submarine warfare and surface ship engagement, showcasing advanced stealth and firepower capabilities. In contrast, the Borey-class submarines serve as carriers of strategic nuclear weapons, specifically the Bulava intercontinental ballistic missiles, reinforcing Russia's nuclear triad.
