King Salman Inaugurates Riyadh Metro: A Milestone in Public Transport

On November 27, 2024, Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud inaugurated the Riyadh Metro Project, marking the launch of the world's largest metro system constructed simultaneously. The first phase of the metro opened with three of its six planned lines, showcasing a significant advancement in the public transport network of Riyadh. The entire metro system will span 176 kilometers and feature 84 stations, strategically located to serve densely populated areas, government facilities, and major commercial and educational hubs.

The Riyadh Metro aims to alleviate traffic congestion, reduce reliance on private vehicles, and enhance the quality of life for residents. With a construction cost of $22.5 billion, the project is expected to facilitate approximately 1.7 million passenger journeys daily during its initial phase. The metro will connect key destinations, including King Khalid International Airport and major universities, thereby integrating various modes of transport within the city.

Comprehensive Features and Future Impact

The metro system comprises six lines, each designed to traverse high-density areas of the capital. The lines include: - Blue Line: Al-Ulya-Al-Batha-Al-Hair axis (38 km) - Red Line: King Abdullah Road (25.3 km) - Orange Line: Madinah Road - Prince Saad bin Abdul Rahman I Road (40.7 km) - Yellow Line: King Khalid International Airport Road (29.6 km) - Green Line: King Abdulaziz Road axis (12.9 km) - Purple Line: Abdul Rahman bin Auf Road - Sheikh Hassan bin Hussein bin Ali Road (30 km)

The metro stations are equipped with air conditioning, internet access, and information systems for passengers. Some stations will also feature retail spaces and parking facilities. The project is expected to significantly reduce pollution levels in Riyadh by 36% and decrease road maintenance costs. Ticket prices are structured to be affordable, with options for short-term and long-term travel, and children under six traveling for free. Electronic booking is available through the Darb card and the Riyadh Buses app.
