The Path to a Left-Wing Union: Challenges and Conditions
Raphaël Glucksmann, the highest-ranked left-wing candidate in the recent European elections, has set forth specific conditions for a potential alliance on the left in anticipation of the early legislative elections on June 30 and July 7. Speaking on France 2’s 8 p.m. segment with Anne-Sophie Lapix, Glucksmann emphasized the urgent need for unity against the rising influence of the National Rally led by Jordan Bardella, which garnered 31.36% of the vote. He warned of the dangers a far-right government could pose, particularly under the leadership of Marine Le Pen, Bardella, and Marion Maréchal.
Glucksmann criticized President Emmanuel Macron for his actions, describing them as reckless and potentially leading to the dissolution of the National Assembly. To prevent the far-right from gaining control, he stressed the importance of the left presenting a united and clear front, maintaining a 'clear course.' However, Glucksmann dismissed the idea of re-creating Nupes (New Ecological and Social People's Union), pointing to the recent shift in the balance of power among leftist factions.
Conditions for a Left-Wing Alliance
Glucksmann outlined several 'conditions' for forming a left-wing coalition, stressing 'unwavering support for European construction' and for 'Ukrainian resistance.' Other conditions included accelerating ecological transition and rejecting the brutalization of political life. These terms must be met to establish what Glucksmann referred to as the 'Popular Front.'

They emphasized the necessity for unwavering support for the Ukrainian resistance, respect for international borders, the release of Hamas hostages, a ceasefire in Gaza, and the recognition of a Palestinian state. They also stressed the importance of progressing European construction, reindustrializing the continent, and enhancing public services. Other key points touched upon increasing the purchasing power of French citizens, repealing contentious reforms, tackling super profits, and fighting for gender equality.
Glucksmann proposed that Laurent Berger, the former general secretary of the CFDT, should be appointed Prime Minister if the left secures victory in the upcoming legislative elections. Describing Berger as a calming figure and the antithesis of President Macron, Glucksmann believes Berger could lead a project of social justice and ecological advancement. Glucksmann himself ruled out the possibility of becoming head of government and explicitly stated that neither he nor Jean-Luc Mélenchon would assume that role.
