Qatar's Stance on Gaza Ceasefire Talks
In a recent press conference, Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani stated that there have been no ceasefire discussions or communications with any involved parties regarding the Gaza Strip in recent weeks. He expressed concern over the lack of dialogue, stating, "We move in the same circle amid silence from everyone." This remark highlights the stagnation in efforts to establish peace in the region amidst ongoing tensions.
Sheikh Mohammed made these comments at the conclusion of the Gulf-European summit held in Brussels, which focused on critical discussions surrounding the Middle East, particularly in relation to Gaza and Lebanon. He emphasized that the current priority should be to halt the aggression against the Lebanese people and reiterated that a two-state solution remains the only viable resolution to the ongoing conflict.
The summit, marking a significant collaboration between the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and the European Union (EU), was the first of its kind since the establishment of official relations in 1989. It was co-chaired by Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Emir of Qatar, and Charles Michel, President of the European Council. In their final statement, the leaders of the EU and GCC expressed their support for the efforts of the United States, Qatar, and Egypt in seeking a ceasefire in Gaza while also calling for an end to the escalation of violence in Lebanon.
