Putin's Vision for a Multipolar World at the IX BRICS Legal Forum
Russian President Vladimir Putin opened the IX BRICS Legal Forum with a message emphasizing the need for a fair multipolar world. His address, published by the Kremlin, highlighted the theme of the forum, ‘Law on Guard for a Just World,’ which aligns with Russia's chairmanship priorities within BRICS. Putin expressed the importance of establishing a truly democratic multipolar world order based on clear legal norms that can be universally applied.
In his remarks, Putin underscored the increasing demand for direct communication among legal scholars and practitioners from BRICS member states, especially as the bloc expands. He outlined the forum's agenda, which includes critical topics such as international justice, legal education, trade and investment law, intellectual property, and mechanisms for resolving cross-border commercial disputes. The President is optimistic that the discussions will lead to constructive proposals that bolster the partnership among BRICS nations.
Strengthening Legal Cooperation Among BRICS Nations
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov also addressed the forum, asserting its role as a vital international platform for legal professionals. He reiterated that the central theme of the forum reflects contemporary global challenges, particularly the attempts by the collective West, led by the United States, to impose a rules-based world order that undermines existing international legal frameworks. Lavrov reaffirmed Russia's commitment to the principles of the UN Charter and the importance of respecting the rights of diverse nations.
The IX BRICS Legal Forum, taking place on September 19-20 at MGIMO University in Moscow, is a collaborative effort between the Association of Lawyers of Russia and MGIMO, and marks a significant event in the Russian Federation's BRICS Presidency for 2024. The forum will gather legal experts from member countries, including China, India, Brazil, South Africa, and several others, to strengthen legal cooperation, enhance legal diplomacy, and harmonize legal systems across the bloc. A declaration summarizing the joint intentions and commitments of the participants will be issued at the forum's conclusion.
