Pope Francis to Drive First Electric Popemobile
In a significant move towards sustainability, Pope Francis will be the first pontiff to travel in an electric popemobile, designed by Mercedes-Benz. This new vehicle, based on the electric G-Class 580, was officially handed over to the Vatican on December 4, 2024, by Ola Källenius, the CEO of Mercedes-Benz, along with other key executives. The popemobile is set to make its debut during the 2025 Jubilee, a major event expected to draw around 33 million pilgrims to Rome.
The new popemobile features a pearly white exterior and an all-white interior, emphasizing its modern design. Notably, the vehicle has a central, height-adjustable seat for the Pope that swivels, allowing him to engage with the crowd more effectively. The design took a year to complete, with extensive modifications made to the original G-Class to meet Vatican specifications, including a retractable roof for better interaction with the faithful.
A Step Towards Sustainable Development
This initiative aligns with Pope Francis's commitment to environmental stewardship as outlined in his encyclical "Laudato Si," which advocates for sustainable development and ecological responsibility. The Vatican's decision to adopt an electric vehicle reflects a broader trend towards energy transition, even ahead of Europe's planned shift to electric vehicles by 2035.
The new popemobile is designed for low-speed public appearances, ensuring safety and comfort for the Pope while minimizing its carbon footprint. The vehicle's modifications include a seamless design for the rear door and an integrated seating arrangement for security personnel, showcasing a blend of functionality and aesthetics tailored for the Holy Father.
Historical Context of Vatican Vehicles
Mercedes-Benz has a long-standing relationship with the Vatican, having supplied vehicles for nearly a century. The introduction of this electric popemobile marks a new chapter in this partnership, as it combines tradition with innovation. While previous popemobiles have been gas-powered, this electric model signifies a shift towards more environmentally friendly practices within the Vatican.
As Pope Francis prepares for his upcoming public appearances, including a visit to Corsica on December 15, the anticipation surrounding the new popemobile highlights the Vatican's commitment to addressing climate change and promoting a message of hope and trust in the post-pandemic era.
