Pope Francis Makes Historic Visit to Corsica
Pope Francis is set to embark on a historic visit to Corsica on Sunday, December 17, 2024, marking the first time a sovereign pontiff has visited the Mediterranean island. The visit is expected to draw large crowds, with tens of thousands of Catholic faithful anticipated to gather in the streets of Ajaccio, the island's capital. The Pope's itinerary includes a series of public engagements, including a stroll in the iconic popemobile, an open-air mass, and a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron.
The Pope's arrival at Ajaccio airport is scheduled for 9:00 a.m. local time, where he will be greeted by children singing in Corsican. Following this warm welcome, he will engage in a crowd bath along the seafront before addressing attendees at the Palais des Congrès et d'Exposition, where he will close a conference on popular religiosity in the Mediterranean at 10:15 a.m. The day will culminate with a mass at 3:30 p.m. at the Casone open-air theater, expected to attract around 9,000 participants.
Security and Preparations for the Papal Visit
In preparation for the Pope's visit, Ajaccio has implemented extensive security measures, including traffic restrictions and the deployment of 2,200 security personnel. This includes soldiers from the Sentinelles force and the installation of snipers and patrols along the Pope's route. A special air security system has also been arranged to ensure the safety of the event.
The local clergy will don specific colors for the occasion, with pink vestments symbolizing the transition from Advent to Christmas. The visit, which is part of the Pope's 47th international trip since his election in 2013, is seen as a significant moment for the Catholic community in Corsica, where approximately 80% of the 350,000 residents identify as Catholic. Bishop François-Xavier Bustillo, who invited the Pope, emphasized the importance of the visit for the local diocese, which faces economic challenges. The event is expected to foster a sense of unity and celebration among the faithful.
