Pope Francis Makes Historic Visit to Corsica
Pope Francis made history on December 15, 2024, by becoming the first pontiff to visit Corsica, a French island known for its rich cultural heritage. Arriving in Ajaccio at 9 a.m., he was warmly welcomed by local officials and the public. The visit was part of his 47th Apostolic Journey, aimed at promoting peace and addressing popular religiosity in the Mediterranean region.
During his visit, the Pope presided over a Mass and engaged with the Corsican community, blessing children and the elderly, including a 108-year-old woman. He emphasized the importance of peace, calling for harmony in the Middle East and praying for the people of Ukraine and Russia, whom he referred to as
brothers and cousins.
The Pope's message resonated deeply, as he urged for understanding and reconciliation, stating, "War is always a defeat. Peace to the whole world."
A Day of Ceremonies and Speeches
The day's events included a speech at the Ajaccio Congress and Exhibition Center, where Pope Francis addressed themes of secularism and the significance of popular piety. He highlighted Corsica's devotion to the Virgin Mary, the island's patron saint, during a visit to the Virgin of the Madonuccia. The Pope also participated in the Angelus prayer at the Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption Cathedral, alongside local clergy and faithful.
The visit culminated in a Mass at Place d'Austerlitz, where approximately 8,000 attendees gathered to witness the sacred service, featuring traditional Corsican polyphonies. This event not only celebrated the island's Christian heritage but also showcased the vibrant cultural expressions of the local community.
Meeting with President Macron
Before concluding his visit, Pope Francis is scheduled to meet with French President Emmanuel Macron at Ajaccio airport. This meeting is significant as it marks a diplomatic engagement between the Vatican and France, following the Pope's previous visits to French territories. The pontiff's choice to visit Corsica underscores his commitment to connecting with communities that embody deep-rooted traditions and popular faith practices, furthering his mission of pastoral outreach and peace advocacy.
