Patrice Evra Sentenced to 12 Months in Prison
Former French football team captain Patrice Evra has been sentenced to twelve months in prison by the Hauts-de-Seine criminal court. The court found Evra guilty of abandonment of family, as he failed to pay child support for his two children with his first wife, Sandra Evra, since July 2020. The total amount of unpaid child support is reported to be 969,000 euros.
Evra, who is now in a relationship with model Margaux Alexandra and has two children with her, has appealed the decision. His lawyer, Jérôme Boursican, stated that the facts are disputed and mentioned that Evra had provided his ex-wife with substantial financial support, including an apartment, a house with a swimming pool in the south of France, and nearly two million euros for her daily life.
Legal Troubles and Reactions
The court also ordered Evra to pay his ex-wife 4,000 euros for moral damage and 2,000 euros for procedural costs. Nathalie Dubois, the plaintiff’s lawyer, expressed hope that this decision would make Evra understand that he is not above the law. She emphasized that Sandra had supported Evra throughout his football career, having met him at the age of 15.
This is not the first time Evra has faced legal issues. In February 2023, he was fined 1,000 euros for a homophobic insult made in a video after a Manchester United victory against PSG in the Champions League. He was also required to pay damages to two civil party associations, Mousse and Stop Homophobia.
Evra's legal team maintains that he has fulfilled his financial obligations and that the trial is a result of his ex-wife refusing to return the money lent to her. The appeal process is ongoing, and the final outcome remains to be seen.
