Paris Olympics Preparations Underway with Full-Scale River Rehearsals
The preparations for the Paris Olympics are in high gear as nearly fifty boats participated in a full-scale rehearsal on the Seine River on Monday morning. This rehearsal, which took place between the Pont d'Austerlitz and the Pont d'Iena, was initially scheduled for early April but had to be postponed twice due to excessive river flow caused by adverse weather conditions affecting the Ile-de-France region. A similar rehearsal had also occurred on July 17, 2023, featuring around forty boats.
During a press briefing, Thierry Reboul, the organizing committee’s director of ceremonies, noted significant improvements since the first rehearsal. 'We were clearly a few minutes late during the first trace of the first training,' he recalled. 'We learned from it, we continue to train, and today we are very satisfied with the timing and precision. We are happy with the near-to-the-second accuracy for each boat,' he assured. The boats are expected to take 45 minutes to complete their journey. In this latest test, fifty-five boats set off from the Austerlitz bridge at around 6:30 a.m. Monday, with the Seine's circulation having been closed off at 4:30 a.m. for the event.
Technical Tests and Challenges Addressed
A significant technical rehearsal is set for June 24, which will involve all 89 boats that will partake in the opening ceremony on July 26. Navigating the Seine poses unique challenges, particularly concerning the river’s flow, which increases with precipitation, complicating the navigation. 'The river flow has decreased significantly and quickly. Although the flow rate is still high, we are nearing the usual conditions for July,' explained Reboul. Indeed, the opening ceremony planned for six kilometers along the Seine represents a novel format that the organizers and the International Olympic Committee are heavily banking on.
The latest rehearsal under a cloudy but dry sky featured boats of various sizes parading in single file, with names like 'Paris Montmartre,' 'Le Chansonnier,' and 'Mistinguett.' Fast boats from the police headquarters escorted the convoy, with law enforcement stationed along the quays and bridges to ensure security. This technical rehearsal brought together 55 of the 89 barges, setting the stage for the grand event expected to captivate more than 300,000 spectators and a billion television viewers globally. The initial test faced delays due to high river flow from heavy rainfalls.
Perfecting the Performance
The first rehearsal of the fleet had already taken place in July, divided into two walks, or 'traces,' scheduled for dawn and 10 a.m. respectively. Reboul highlighted the progress made, noting that the team 'rehearsed like musicians,' maintaining timing almost to the second. 'During the first trace, we were a few minutes late, so we are very satisfied,' he remarked. Boats maintained a cruising speed of 9 km/h, with the ability to decelerate to 7–8 km/h or accelerate to 11–12 km/h if needed.
A dress rehearsal involving the entire fleet is planned for June 24, but no artistic elements were included in the recent test to preserve the surprise for the actual ceremony. 'We have the means to hold the most beautiful ceremony!' enthused Reboul, underscoring the importance of ensuring seamless coordination and showmanship for the highly anticipated opening ceremony.

The unique river-based opening ceremony design aims to spotlight the historical and cultural beauty of Paris while showcasing advancements in event planning and river navigation technology. The coordination of such an event requires meticulous planning and rehearsal to guarantee flawless execution.
- Safety measures during the rehearsal included the participation of law enforcement agencies to secure the area, reflecting the high-security protocol expected during the Games. The steadfast commitment from all involved parties is evident, with close attention paid to timing and precision, as even minor deviations could critically impact the unfolding of the opening ceremony.
- The ongoing preparations and rehearsals highlight the collaborative efforts between the Paris Olympic Organizing Committee, local authorities, and the International Olympic Committee to deliver an unprecedented and spectacular opening ceremony that will set a new benchmark for future Olympic Games.
