July 14 Celebrations Adapt to Olympic Games Constraints
The traditional July 14 military parade in Paris has seen a significant change in its route this year due to the upcoming Olympic Games. For the first time in 45 years, the parade will not follow its usual path on the Champs-Élysées. Instead, it will commence from Place de l'Etoile and end at Place du Maréchal-de-Lattre-de-Tassigny. This change is necessitated by the use of Place de la Concorde for Olympic events like freestyle BMX, skateboarding, breaking, and three-way basketball.
Festivities Across Île-de-France
In addition to the military parade, France will be buzzing with various events to celebrate Bastille Day. From popular dances, picnics, and fireworks to concerts, the entire country will be in a festive mood. The weather forecast looks promising, adding to the excitement. Many town halls have themed their celebrations around the Olympic Games, with the Olympic flame making a special appearance in Paris on July 14. The flame, relit in Olympia on April 16, will traverse 60 km through Paris over two days before the opening ceremony on July 26.
The July 14 military parade will take place on Avenue Foch this year, focusing on themes of Olympism and commemorating 80 years since the Landings, the Liberation of France, and Victory. Post-parade, the public is invited to Les Invalides to meet soldiers and explore military machinery.
Fireworks and Cultural Events
The Eiffel Tower will host a grand fireworks display on the evening of July 14, themed 'Liberty'. This 30-minute spectacle will be a highlight, although viewing will be restricted as Champ-de-Mars and Trocadéro will be closed to the public. Other fireworks displays and events will take place across Île-de-France, including music and bonfires along the Seine in Levallois-Perret and a 'republican meeting' in Évry-Courcouronnes.
For those interested in culture, the Louvre Museum will offer free entry on July 14, continuing a long-standing tradition. The museum is currently featuring a temporary exhibition titled 'Olympism: A modern invention, an ancient heritage'.
Lastly, the Longchamp racecourse will host an open garden party with horse races, entertainment, and a performance by The Avener. This paid event offers a unique way to end the day’s celebrations.
