Palestinian Doctors Association in Europe Raises Funds for Gaza Medical Students
The Palestinian Doctors Association in Europe (PalMed) has successfully raised over $150,000 to support medical students in Gaza through the Gaza Education Medical Academy (GEM) initiative. This fundraising effort took place during a comprehensive academic conference held at the Royal College of Medicine in London, attended by international doctors and experts. The conference, titled “Reviving Medical Education in Gaza: Challenges and Solutions,” highlighted the significant obstacles faced by medical education in the region due to ongoing blockades and the destruction of health facilities.
Addressing Challenges in Medical Education
During the conference, key speakers, including Hussam Eddin Adwan, a Consultant Surgeon at Worrell University Hospital, emphasized the importance of hope and resilience for students and faculty in Gaza. Professor Mahmoud Al-Lubani, President of PalMed Academy, noted that the funds raised would be crucial in maintaining the continuity of medical education and training for future healthcare professionals in Gaza. The GEM initiative, launched in June 2024, has already registered over 210 students, supported by more than a thousand international volunteers providing lectures and resources.
Global Solidarity and Future Prospects
The conference also featured testimonies from students in Gaza, who participated remotely. They shared the daily challenges they face, including dangers during clinical training. The event concluded with a charity dinner that further solidified the commitment to support medical education in Gaza. PalMed Academy aims to enhance healthcare for Palestinians through education, ensuring that medical training continues despite the ongoing challenges posed by the blockade and occupation.
