Oxfam Reports Dire Humanitarian Situation in Northern Gaza
Oxfam, a prominent non-governmental organization, has revealed alarming statistics regarding the humanitarian crisis in northern Gaza. In a statement released on December 22, 2024, the organization reported that only 12 trucks of humanitarian aid have been distributed over a period of 75 days, highlighting the severe restrictions imposed by the Israeli military on aid deliveries. This limited access has resulted in a catastrophic humanitarian situation, with many civilians facing starvation and lack of essential supplies.
The organization emphasized that the Israeli army has systematically obstructed the delivery of aid, allowing only 34 trucks to enter the region during this timeframe. Oxfam noted that the situation has worsened significantly since the onset of military operations on October 6, 2023, which have severely limited the ability of humanitarian organizations to provide necessary assistance. Reports indicate that thousands of individuals remain isolated, with many running out of food and water, as they seek refuge in shelters.
In addition to the restrictions on aid, Oxfam reported instances where the Israeli military conducted evacuation and bombing operations immediately following the distribution of food and water to shelters, further exacerbating the crisis. The organization accused the Israeli army of implementing a strategy aimed at displacing the population of northern Gaza, effectively besieging them with hunger and preventing displaced individuals from returning to their homes.
The ongoing conflict has resulted in a staggering humanitarian toll, with reports indicating nearly 153,000 casualties, including a significant number of children and women, and over 11,000 individuals reported missing. The situation continues to deteriorate, leading to widespread famine and suffering among the civilian population.
