Bombings in Brasilia Raise Security Concerns Ahead of G20 Summit
In a tragic incident just days before Brazil is set to host the G20 summit, a suicide bombing occurred near the Supreme Federal Court in Brasilia, resulting in the death of one individual. The explosions took place on Wednesday evening in the parking lot of the Three Powers Square, a significant location that connects the main government buildings of Brazil. The first explosion happened in the parking lot, followed by a second explosion in front of the court, where the bomber's body was found.
According to local officials, the deceased man attempted to enter the Supreme Court before detonating explosives. Selina Liu, a local official, confirmed that the man was the owner of a nearby parked vehicle, which was also damaged in the blasts. Fortunately, no other injuries were reported, but the incident has heightened security concerns as Brazil prepares to welcome leaders from around the world, including Chinese President Xi Jinping, who is expected to visit Brasilia following the G20 meeting in Rio de Janeiro.
The Supreme Court had just concluded a public session when the explosions occurred, prompting a swift evacuation of the judges present. This incident echoes previous unrest in the area, notably the riots in January 2023, when supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro protested against his electoral defeat, leading to significant damage to government buildings.
